Global Communication

May 14, 2008 / by CantGetThereFromHere

In business, making sure the communicator understands what the communicatee understands is of importance.  Without good communications jobs, agreements and transactions have a tendency to fail.  Nowadays globalization has become an important part of the world’s transactions.  Without good communication globalization would fail.  Therefore, English has become the common used lingo.

By using English as a common language the world has been able to do business not only in English speaking countries but in other countries that do not speak English.  So why has English been the chosen language?  I feel it is because of World War Two.  After World War Two most of the industrialized world was in shambles.  However, the United States industries were at full capacity and there was plenty of labor.  At the time in the United States food was cheap because farmers grew a surplus of food for the war.  Therefore, the United States was able to feed and supply the world with its products and that meant countries had to communicate with businessmen in English.

An other reason I feel that the world has converted to the English language is because people living in countries that are bad off economically want to move to English speaking countries.  This is to better their lives have work and health care.  The book Jasmine by Bharti Mukherjee gives an excellent example of this.  In the story Jasmine and her husband want to move to the United States in order to better their careers.  The both of them study English and want to learn English.  This example is a real example it is not simply from a story.  People around the world want to learn English for the chance to live in the United States.

I feel that English use worldwide happened because it was at the right place at the right time.  The effect from World War Two changed the world and still is.  Globalization is key to economies around the world and in order to communicate we have to have a common language.  So that is why I feel English is the “lingua franca” of the world.
